After successfully completing the residency the chiropractic physician is eligible to sit for the board examination that leads to certification. The exam is taken in two parts and covers all aspects of diagnostic imaging including bone, neuroradiology, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and musculoskeletal topics.

This pathway leads to diplomate status with the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology (DACBR) and membership into the American Chiropractic College of Radiology, a model of specialization paralleling that of the medical profession. There have been less than 300 chiropractic physicians that have successfully completed this certification process. (There are approximately 60,000 licensed chiropractic physicians in the U.S.)

The training does not end with board certification. Similar to medical and osteopathic radiologists, the chiropractic radiologist generally receives additional fellowship training in musculoskeletal and/or neuroradiological advanced imaging. This is acquired through programs that are approved through accredited institutions that generally can offer an AMA category in continuing medical education.

These programs are provided by some of the most prestigious medical institutions and organizations. Furthermore, the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology requires additional hours on an annual basis in order to maintain their Advanced Imaging certification.

Chiropractic radiologists can serve in several professional capacities. Some will find their place in an academic or administrative role, including teaching and research at a chiropractic or medical school.

Many provide postgraduate-level lectures through various venues. Almost all chiropractic radiologists provide some form of diagnostic imaging consulting services. This generally includes interpretation of x-ray film, MRI and CT scans for chiropractic and medical clinics, as well as other diagnostic imaging centers.

Another important role for the chiropractic radiologist is in the legal arena. This includes expert testimony or consultation regarding legal matters, such as medical malpractice, personal injury, workers’ compensation, merit determination and insurance claim disputes.

Our office, located in the Tampa Bay area, has three chiropractic radiologists with over 40 years of combined experience. This includes the interpretation of over 200,000 MRI cases and several hundred thousand x-rays. We interpret images for medical and chiropractic physicians throughout Florida and several other states.

This includes images received through over 40 diagnostic imaging facilities. Through hundreds of hours of advanced training, we have essentially evolved into a sub-specialty practice of spinal and musculoskeletal diseases. The majority of cases involve intervertebral disc disease, such as herniation and extremity injury.
